Suzanne Dix "Waimea Canyon"

This canvas is the realization of a dream. My work had been getting larger and larger and I longed to have the space to paint big. I got a building structure started on my land in 2004 and worked on it all through 2005 to make it into my studio. By December 2005 I had the canvas for Waimea Canyon stretched – four feet tall and eight feet long. I was really excited. Here I was, in my studio, sketching out the canyon from photos I’d taken earlier that year.

I enjoyed working on this painting. It always makes me feel as though I’m flying out over the river, enjoying the cliffs and marveling how far it is to the ocean.

It’s also one of those paintings that falls in the category – “no one will ever own this view.” There will never be a house built with this vista of Kauai – but – the person who owns this painting will have the view in their home.
