One of the most treasured spots on Hawai`i Island is the black sand beach at Punalu`u in Ka`u. Outlining the beach is a grove of coconut palms. They live on strip of sand that divides the brackish ponds of Punalu`u from the sea. The ponds are mysterious and romantic to me. In the painting I cleaned up the huts on the far side as if they were actually lived in. It’s one of those places everyone would love to live in – paradise by the sea in a grass hut. It took a diptych form because I worked on it plein aire (out-of-doors) and two separate canvases (30” x 36”) were easier to travel with than a single 30” x 72” canvas.
