"Pinao"
Two paintings that create one image is called a diptych.
24" x 48" Acrylic on Canvas

There are places in the islands that can make one feel exhilarated, but small and insignificant at the same time. Pinao is one of those places. Here the sea always rages with whitewater. A sacred burial ground is marked by the upright poles planted in lava rock on the right side of the image. An altar in lava rocks in the painting's lower left corner reminds visitors to retain their humility in this place.

I spent two hours on location, battling the wind to capture the initial image. The painting always transports me - not only to that place, but to another time - a time long ago. Was this the first beach the Polynesians set foot on when they landed in Hawai`i? What are those whisperings one hears on the wind when visiting here? Is there any sight more beautiful than this?
