"When the volcano began sending volumes of volcanic ash and smoke into our skies last May, my inspiration for plein air (on location) painting dissipated. The gray skies and sometimes sulfury smelling air kept me inside the studio working on other projects.
Finally I emerged deciding to record the source. Before dawn one morning I sat in the dark at the overlook above Honu`apo. As light began to illumine my subject, I sketched and absorbed the day that was just beginning. From that vantage point, the volcanic plume is at least 50 miles away; to have it clearly visible from that distance and to see the larger effects the eruption creates is dramatic and beautiful - my favorite ingredients for artwork!"
