Suzanne Dix "Mauna Loa with Snow"

Driving to Hilo one day I left home and drove through rain all the way to the Ka`u Desert. As I emerged from the clouds, Mauna Loa was clearly visible with snow on her upper slopes. I pulled over and sketched the scene onto a 22” x 48” canvas, made notes and went on.

This painting always fills me with renewed love for the land. It is a scene unique to Hawai'i. Man’s land clearing on the slopes is dwarfed by the volcano in the background and framed by her formidable lava fields in the foreground.
